FAQs

Are the phases mini competitions in themselves? Do you win per phase and advance to the next phase or can you keep trying up to the final judging phase provided you submitted by the first deadline phase?

Yes, phases are mini competitions in that we are awarding prizes in each phase, and entries in one phase do not influence judgments in other phases. Contestants do not advance to the next phase, per se. Mod developers may enter one or multiple phases of the contest, and are eligible to receive prizes in multiple phases.

I'm under 18 and want to participate in the contest. What should I do?

We can only accept submissions from mod developers 18 years of age and up. An adult you trust may enter the contest as your team representative and claim any winnings.

Should I choose to submit an entry, are there any logos provided by Epic that I can use to add to my website and download page?

We have a fan art policy, which you can view here.

If I purchase a texture library that gives me commercial use rights, can I use this towards my game design? How does this work with commercial models as well (buildings, plants, cars, etc.-anything that cuts production time provided you have commercial use rights to those objects)?

If you have purchased the commercial rights to use external content, then you may use said content in your UT3 mods. Submissions may not promote third party products or services, or incorporate third party intellectual property. Usage of all content must comply with the UT3 EULA.

If I create a new game type or mod, does it have to be compatible with existing maps or can it have a life of its own.

It can have a life of its own. The sky is the limit!

If I create a game type that contains elements that can be considered for a new weapon, vehicle, etc., can I submit those elements as entries into those other categories?

Absolutely, you may submit the same mod for consideration in multiple categories.

What are your recommendations for downloadable entries for the public? Should I create my own site for downloads, or are there resources where I can submit them?

Contestants will upload mods through www.makesomethingunreal.com, which is hosted by FilePlanet. If you do not have a FilePlanet ID, you may simultaneously use this web site register with the contest and FilePlanet, and then submit your mod. If you already have a FilePlanet ID, you may simply log in and proceed directly to the web-based file transfer page. Once your upload is complete, you will be redirected to a confirmation page that lists the direct link to your mod. All mods will be immediately and publicly available at FilePlanet.

If I have a solo entry and I wish to bring other people into my project in later phases... is that allowed?

Yes, your team would need to designate you as the team representative, and you would need to agree amongst yourselves on how to distribute any winnings.

If I join a group to create a project, can I still submit my own solo submission considering I own all the rights to the project submitted?

You may participate as a member of a mod team, and also submit projects you have created on your own separately. If you are the team representative for your group, be sure to clearly specify whether you are submitting a mod on behalf of your team or only yourself when populating "Author Name" in the submission form.

If you start with a group and for some reason they disband, can you continue with the project submissions given you have permission from the original party? Can the party in question transfer sole rights to you if they choose not to continue any further?

Yes, if your team disbands and agrees that you may carry on as team representative (solo or with additional assistance), then you are welcome to proceed with submission.

Is there a group member count? Can I only have 10 or so people working on our project?

We don't regulate this, so the size of your team is totally up to you. For prize redemption, your team does have to appoint one person as the team representative. All winnings are awarded to the team representative.

If my group of 10 people were to win, would we all get a Velocity Micro PC or would we only get a pre-selected amount?

The Velocity Micro PCs are being awarded in Phase 1 only. Each PC has been assigned to a specific category so the only way to win more than one PC is to win first place in more than one category in the first phase.

If we enter a good end-product in Phase 3, do we have to submit a second design with significant improvements in Phase 4 to be considered for Grand Prize judging?

Resubmission is not required as the grand final judgment will take into account all entries. If you choose to submit again, we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the extra time and implement some visible improvements to your mod.

If I create a game type and the first submission has a level that I would like to change completely, can that be done considering the gameplay and all the crucial elements of that game type will remain intact?

Yes, in fact, you may submit a mod up to three times within one contest phase. We strongly recommend that visible improvements be present from one submission to the next.

Do we have to submit our project in Phase 3 to be considered for Grand Prize judging, or can we enter in Phase 4 alone?

You may submit in phase 4 alone for consideration in the grand finals. If you choose to submit for both phases 3 and 4, we encourage you to take advantage of the extra time and implement some visible improvements in the later submission. If you submit mods more than once, we will consider the most recent submission for judging in each phase.

Do the Phase 4 and Grand Final versions of the project have to show considerable improvement to have a chance in winning?

This is not a requirement.

If I enter an incomplete project, can I submit a letter of how I intend to complete the project by the final phase deadline? For example, if I have a game type I would like to create, but am not sure I can have it ready by the first phase, can I submit a letter describing the direction in which I am going?

We can only review playable submissions, although you are welcome to resubmit mods that exhibit visible improvements. Note that except for the grand finals, you can submit an entry even if you have not entered previous phases of the contest. For example, you could submit your new gametype in Phase 3, even if you did not enter Phase 1 or Phase 2 of the contest.

What are the base requirements for level design submission? Does the level need to be completely finished or only partly finished?

Entries will be judged as completely finished levels, although it's tough to assign a quantifiable definition to "finished". Mods will be evaluated as submitted, but if you submit a map with zero visuals, the odds of winning are slim.

What files need to be included in submission? Fully published map? Custom map file? Readme or modified *.ini files? Others?

Everything required to use the mod - except what shipped with UT3 - should be included with your submission. We recommend detailing what you think is cool about the map/mod to give judges insight into your project.

For the grand prize, do I have to pay taxes to obtain the license?

We are working to minimize all out of pocket expenses for the grand prize winner.
